My Purpose: "To serve God. To serve my family. To serve my patients."
You clicked on this page, which means you must want to know more about me before you decide if I'm the right doctor for you… so here goes!
I guess I should start by introducing myself: I'm Dr. Matt Smith. I am a chiropractor in Birmingham, Alabama and I'm happy that you're interested in chiropractic and/or my chiropractic practice. I would love the opportunity to be your chiropractor for as long as you see fit.
I'm a Birmingham native who has returned home to provide world-class chiropractic care for people throughout Alabama. I graduated from Vestavia Hills High School, lettering in football and track & field. I went on to earn my Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee, where I was also a four-year starter at defensive tackle and was selected to First Team All-Conference three of those years.
I attended chiropractic school at Life University in Atlanta, Georgia on an athletic scholarship for their elite rugby program, and graduated from the Doctor of Chiropractic curriculum with honors. While there, I earned the Outstanding Student Clinician award during my final year and achieved clinical proficiency in multiple adjusting techniques.
During my years in practice, I have been fortunate to work with hundreds of Division-I athletes, Olympic and professional athletes, as well as local celebrities and powers-that-be. You don't have to be a famous athlete to be under my care, but most people I work with are typically looking to get the most out of their life.
I am proud to be the first doctor in Alabama to pass the Certified Chiropractic Wellness Practitioner exam, allowing me to properly train and educate patients on the genetic requirements for health. I am board certified by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners in both chiropractic and physiotherapeutics. I am also a member of the Alabama State Chiropractic Association, the American Chiropractic Association, the International Chiropractic Association and serve on the National Council on Wellness Science.
I'm passionate about a lot of things, but here's just a few:
A Passion for Chiropractic
around transitioning patients from a short-term focus on pain to a long-term vision of optimum health and wellness. Despite what you've been told, chiropractic is more than just a neck and back pain treatment; chiropractic is a vital component to overall health. Honestly, I wish my patients knew everything I knew about chiropractic and how it benefits their body & their life. That's part of the motivation for doing my wellness workshops in the office. You should come to one… they're catered!
The human body is such an incredible thing. The more you learn about it, the more awestruck you become. It has this amazingly innate ability to self-heal, self-maintain & self-regulate so long as nothing gets in its way and all the required ingredients for health are in place. Chiropractic is a safe, natural, effective way to increase performance, not just in sports, but in life. Every day there are wonderful, positive changes happening for patients as a result of the chiropractic care they receive in my office, and I can't believe that I get to do this for a living!
A Passion for Sports
I started playing sports very early in life, and I haven't really stopped.
I've been involved in athletics my whole life, I naturally enjoy caring for athletes and the active - improving the sports performance of my patients through the benefits of chiropractic care. I have been the team chiropractor for the University of Alabama-Birmingham sports programs since 2010 evaluating and caring for athletes from every sport. I see the full spectrum of athletic ability in my office, caring for elite-level athletes but also the weekend warriors as well as people who are just getting started on their fitness journey. Wherever you find yourself on that spectrum, chances are I can help give you an advantage.
A Passion for Family
If there's one thing I wish my parents had known about when I was a child... it is chiropractic. Chiropractic isn't about cracking bones, it's about helping your nervous system function as well as it possibly can. You literally live your life through your nervous system! Anything that can help the one system that runs your entire body work better is going to boost your overall health. I want to give you and your family the opportunity to get a head start on something I was missing for so long.
My beautiful wife, Julie, and I are blessed with two incredible sons. We all have our nervous systems checked and get adjusted on a weekly basis. I enjoy hobbies that keep me active, which include things like CrossFit, running, biking, yoga, rugby, muay thai kickboxing, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
If you read all that… wow, thanks!
I hope I get the opportunity to meet you soon.
